The Groove – Play That Funky Bingo – Blurb from April 22, 2026

Round 1 drifted in on that warm (?) 🌬️ 1960s breeze, the kind that makes the whole room loosen up before the first number even hits the mic. “Hard To Handle” strutted through the speakers, “Let’s Twist Again” reminded everyone that muscle memory is a myth, and “Surf City” briefly convinced two tables they were harmonizing. They were not. But they believed, and that’s what matters. A whole crew of Funky Bingo achievers popped up during the round, earning their names a fresh spot on the Winner’s Wheel for the end‑of‑night money 💵 spin.

Brittanie spent the evening in a state of personal triumph, loudly and proudly confirming that her last name does indeed begin with "S." Her husband, who never comes to Funky Bingo but apparently enjoys the ongoing saga from afar, will be tickled to hear. Vickie, meanwhile, gave me a lecture about missing last week. This would have landed harder if she had actually been here last week, but she wasn’t. She only heard about it from the blurb, which means she’s now enforcing attendance through lore. That’s a level of commitment I can respect.

Round 2 brought “One Hit Wonders Part 1,” a reminder that some artists capture ⚡lightning exactly once and then spend the rest of their careers politely stepping out of its way. Carl E was among the achievers this round, and the room nodded in collective appreciation for the beautiful chaos of musicians who peaked gloriously and somehow live to make money on it again on the "Remember This One?" circuit. Speaking of peaking, only four people completed the blurb task that was assigned in last week's blurb and earned a free name entry (or second entry) on the prize wheel: Vickie, Brittanie, Jess the Angry Librarian, and their new friend Trish. Everyone else had to earn it the old‑fashioned way, by getting a 5-in-a-row Funky Bingo! This week, you can earn that free win by drawing a dancing stick figure at the bottom of your Round 2 Funky Bingo Card. Even if you don’t achieve bingulation, the Art Bonus card should still be turned in when you picked up your Round 3 card. Stick‑figure choreography is serious business.

Round 3 brought us Fonzie's Jams, songs by groups or artists that begin with "Aaaaayyyy." Almost half the room got that joke. It was cute.

Round 4 was supposed to be a 1970s closer, but a quick survey revealed that the room was not emotionally prepared for that journey. So I sprinted out to the van, grabbed a stack of 90s Pop #1s cards, and the room lit up like someone had just handed out free pagers. That’s when Jess the Angry Librarian shouted “Jess hates the 70s,” and I, in a moment of spiritual clarity, replied “Get behind me, Satan.” Linda M rose as one of the achievers, restoring order and balance to the decade debate.

When the Funky Bingo Wheel of Winners spun its judgment, as witnessed and confirmed by Vickie, it landed on her tablemate Jess the Angry Librarian, and Carly, Matt H, and Amanda E. Jess and I may have had a moment, but the wheel forgives all, and the wheel is final.
